Good evening, if there is something you have to do in Bali is climbing the Mount Batur at night, departure of the hike around 3 am.
The starting point of the hike is located near the Batur lake, I do not know the exact location as I came with a driver. All the guides depart from that point.
Budget
From Ubud with private driver :
Duration : private driver 2 am to 5 pm including visits of your choice after the hike : IDR 800k
Private guide : IDR 500K, you can be asked more or less depends on the conditions.
Mount Batur Entrance : IDR 100k
If you are a group of persons it is cheaper, maximum 4-5 per guide. Might be IDR 300k to IDR 400k each. I heard some person getting the guide for less by negotiating on sight at 3 am.
Total : IDR 1,400 000
With tour operator from Ubud :
Tour price : From IDR 350K.
I choose that option the second time I hiked Batur, unfortunately we got delay and didn’t arrived at the top before the sunrise.

- Clothes: Warm clothes, jumper, rain coat ( It is cold at the top).
- Shoes : Hiking shoe or sport shoes ( The stones are quite sharp).
- Food : Water and some snacks .

1 - Mount batur
The beginning of the hike is a normal road in the forest until reaching a smaller path with sand and high plants. This part of the hike is easy and relaxing, good start to warm up.
After few minutes’ walk, the environment is changing, the guides will stop in front of a small temple to pray and burn incense. This is to wish us luck, purify the air, push evil spirits away and ensure a safe journey. My guide Michel, was so kind, helpful, funny and spoke a lot of funny French words, I really enjoyed the all journey.
Once the path becomes sloping with stones and thick volcanic sand, it is important to take the time to choose where to put your feet to keep your balance. All the way up to the top is stuffed with traps.
Strong & cold wind swept away the heavy sand, it was kind of uncomfortable to walk and it’s get pretty cold. Fortunately, small shelters have been built on the top where you can sit down, order some tea. The guide will prepare banana sandwich and hard-boiled egg to keep you in shape until the sunrise.
The second part of the hike is around the volcano crater itself, the mountain remains active, you can see steam escaping from the stones. You can even boil your eggs and cook. It feels really good to stay nearby.
Best Spot to warm up: I sat down on a hot rock for few minutes to warm up, very efficient.
